What creates a society are the stories a society tells about itself. IDFA selects and collects these stories and invites the public to join the conversation, so that individual worldviews will be widened and perspectives broadened.
The documentaries IDFA showcases can be divided into big themes, such as:

The context: the story of IDFA
The power of IDFA is that documentaries and projects can be contextualised. This is facilitated by talks with directors and the public, reflections by experts and a diverse range of (online) publications. During the festival almost all directors and main characters are present for an insightful talk after the screenings.

That context differentiates a screening at IDFA from a regular cinema screening and contributes to the institute that IDFA is: an arena for the screenings of films and moderated discussions on socially engaged subjects and themes, so that we can give the viewer an unforgettable experience with depth and insights after every screening.
